Wisdom Seen in How we Come to God.

Proverbs 13:1 (ESV)

1 A wise son hears his father's instruction,

but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

- How are you approaching your Heavenly Father

  1. As a Child
  2. As a scoffer?

A Child of God, Hears the father

A Child of God, looks to the Father for instruction

A Child of God, accepts rebuke

A Child of God, knows the Father has what is best for them!

A Scoffer presumes they don’t need instruction

A Scoffer assumes they don’t need rebuked, because they are right in their own eyes.

A Scoffer neither hears, nor listens to the Father

A Scoffer does not receive the Gospel, for they believe they are good enough, on their own, based on what they think is right, without God.

Are we coming to God as children, who need correction, to receive instruction, to hear what God has to speak to us?

  • Do we see God as our loving father, who gives us every good thing we have in life, for our good and His glory?
  • Today, come to God and recognize that He is not only the giver of every good gift, but the guide we need for all our lives today!

Proverbs 12:8-9 - Good sense recognized & speaks truth… a twisted mind, tries to lie…

- How many times have you tried to impress someone?

  • How often, in childhood and adulthood would we rather have someone like us and think everything is OK, then tell them we need help.
  • We all struggle with that on some level.
  • I love what these verses are saying.
  • It is better to be lowly and have a friend, a helper, a servant to to pretend we don’t need anything and just remain in need.
  • Sounds like every time I need to borrow a truck, ask for help, or tell someone I cannot do something on my own.
  • It is hard to ask for help, but it is wise and shows good sense to ask for help, then to try to push forward on our own, and fail…
  • Let’s ask God to open our hearts to where we need His help and need to ask others for help as well today!

Proverbs 12:17-21 (how are we using/presenting the truth) *just speaking truth, or giving Love!

How are we using our words to show Wisdom?

Are we using our words to build others up, to speak of God’s Word or simply to thrust out, like with a sword, to “cut” our enemies by political speech and language, that glorifies ourselves and tears another down.

Are we saying horrible things and trying to cover it up by following each statement with, “I’m just speaking truth?”

These verses are convicting because they speak of “rash” words.

Are we speaking, “rashly” just letting words and thoughts flow freely or are we trying to use our speech to bring healing.

Are we using our words to “Plan Peace” and “have joy”.

Are we using our words to speak the truth in Love?

Or are we just speaking to fill the silence in the conversation.

There is a wise way to speak and a foolish way.

Let’s Pursue the wise way today and pray for God’s help in these things.

V.5 - The thoughts of the righteous seek for what what is Right & Just! Counsels of the world are deceitful and offer the things of the world…

  • What thoughts are going through your mind?
  • Are they promoting the Fruit of the Spirit, (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control) Galatians 5:22-23.
  • Or are they promoting something that makes you look good or another person look bad?
  • The world seeks after its own glory.
  • Believers are called to be seeking and showing God’s glory to the World.
  • Ask God to reveal to you any ways you are trying to deceive or feel that you have to “deceive” in work or life.
  • Ask God to show you a better way to honor Him and live a life that shows your trust is in God, not what the world thinks of you.

Proverbs 11:23-26

- Are we seeking good for others or only seeking after our own desires.

- These are unique verses that truly compare what it looks like to live for yourself vs. What it looks like to live to be a blessing to others...

- The pictures of these verses show

1. Our Desires

2. Our Giving

3. Our Blessings

4. Our Utilization of Gifts...

How are we using these things to be selfless and show God’s love to others?

- the other option is to Hoard everything we have with the hope of keeping it to ourselves.

- When we do that, it becomes an idol, even to ourselves and a blessing to no one...

- Let’s ask GOD to make us selfless, grateful and giving with all that HE has given us...

Proverbs 11:12-13 - Words Matter

- Jesus has told us that the World will know those who are His by the way they treat other believers. John 13:35

- Jesus, and the proverbs go farther to show that what comes out of our mouths is a sign of what is in our hearts. Matthew 15:18

- In Proverbs 11:12-13, the two sinful things that pour forth from mouths are “belittling” and “slandering”...

- Belittling is literally the way you talk about someone, and this truly reveals your pride or your humility.

- If you go around belittling others, mocking, scoffing, saying they are nothing and you are better than them, than you have made yourself the standard for them and you are no longer pointing them to God, but to yourself as (self-righteous).

- Slandering is a picture of consistency... That gives us a picture of what is the normal way in which one is speaking to others? Is it always putting others down and exalting themselves, regardless of the audience and the person being talked about?

Or is it the other two options in v.12-13.

1. Understanding (remaining silent)

2. Trustworthy (Handing what you know well)

- These two other options lead to having sense, and intelligence, whereas the first two reveal a person’s foolishness.

- The interesting thing about the other two options is that they paint a picture of faithfulness.

- Are we using our words to be faithful to our neighbor, to cover their sin, because we live beside them and will obviously know more about them, then we should be spilling out to the world (like a juicy piece of gossip).

- One way to summarize these two verses is simple... Silence is wise, while Hateful Words show the hatred in your own heart.

- What are your words showing the world around you today?

- Let’s Pray and ask God to give us the Wisdom of Silence and when we speak, words that show HIS Greatness & Love to others!

Proverbs 11:2 - The Fruit of Pride & the Fruit of Humility

Proverbs 11:2 is teaching us that:

Pride brings disgrace...

& Humility brings wisdom...

1. How so? Where do we see this to be true in life?

2. What can we do?

Answer the questions?

A. Where do we see pride in our lives...

- what are we looking to others as if they don’t know anything, or we wish they knew as much as we do?

- What areas of our lives do we feel like we have the most to “contribute” to others, even if it is just a contribution of our opinion?

B. How can we seek Humility in those areas

- What will remind us that we do not know it all and cannot do it all.

- What will remind us that we have been taught or we would not know anything about that area of pride.

- What will help us still seek to be patient, teachable and humble in these areas of life?

Proverbs 10:22-32 - The Richness of Righteous Words!

The blessing of the Lord, the blessing of Wisdom in this context, makes Rich.

When we share God’s Word, righteous Words with others, we are sharing Riches that have been given to us by God.

As you read through these verses, think about the difference between the one who heeds God’s Word, has wisdom and trusts God’s Word, compared to the wicked person who lives in fear of punishment and is always trying to “make up” their own wisdom to follow.

In CHRIST, and with the wisdom of God’s Word, we have LIFE, Riches, Hope, Joy…

We also have right thinking, true paths of knowledge and a guide to show us the right way to go…

The Foolishness of the world, only leads to the opposite of those things.

Death, Despair, fear, poverty, failure and hopelessness.

Let’s heed the Wisdom of Proverbs 10, and use our words to show Life today, to those who have no life in themselves.
